Helen, a freelance TV producer and copywriter, has this great energy about her… I knew we’d have fun on our Soulful Shoot from the second we first chatted about it.
Helen wanted a personal branding portrait shoot, where we could create different types of headshots for her two websites - portraits for both writing and TV production. She started copywriting during lockdown, when all TV production work stopped, and realised she enjoyed the creative freedom and opportunity to work independently. So when TV production work returned, she decided to keep doing both and alternating between them. The best of both worlds!
Before the morning of our shoot, we spent some time working on a mood board, building up a picture of the type of shots Helen wanted to represent her in both careers. We discussed styling, props and threw some ideas around about locations. It quickly became clear we needed some interior portraits for Helen’s writing role and outdoor portraits for her TV production.
We settled on Hackney Wick as a location, an old haunt of both mine and Helen’s from those ‘party in an old peanut factory’ days… about 10+ years ago! Perhaps our paths crossed then?!
We started our soulful shoot at Thingy Cafe (best name ever!) to document Helen in more of a ‘writing’ role… cue journal and coffee props… before heading out on the vibey streets of Hackney Wick. We discovered a brightly coloured graffiti shutter for a few urban portraits, before taking some nature shots along the canal beside Barge East and their twinkly lights.
Our last brief stop was Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park where Helen’s outfit totally complemented the rusty backdrop! These turned out to be my favourites from our one hour shoot together and I’m really pleased with how they all turned out, as it seems was Helen… yay!
